“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
In the world of Primerica, we talk a lot about numbers. We talk about how many life insurance policies we write, how many families we help with investments, and how many new teammates we recruit. But there is a secret ingredient that matters more than any of those numbers. It is called your Mindset.
A famous teacher named Carol Dweck found that there are two ways to think. One is a "fixed mindset." This is when you believe you are born with only a certain amount of talent and you can't get any smarter. The other is a "Growth Mindset." This is the belief that you can get better at anything if you work hard and keep learning.
For a Primerica agent, having a growth mindset is the difference between quitting after a week or becoming a Regional Vice President (RVP). It’s about how you handle a "No" at the kitchen table and how you lead your team through tough times.
Here are five simple steps to help you build a growth mindset and win big.
In this business, we face challenges every day. It might be a difficult phone call or a complicated financial plan. People with a fixed mindset try to avoid hard things because they are afraid of looking "dumb" if they fail.
When you start in Primerica, everything is new. You might feel nervous about talking to people or giving a presentation. A growth-minded agent doesn't see this as a problem. They see it as a chance to get stronger.
Think of a hard task like a "gym for your brain." Just like lifting heavy weights makes your muscles grow, doing hard things in your business makes your brain sharper. The more challenges you take on, the better you get at helping families.
In Primerica, we are big on "field training" and coaching. Sometimes, your leader or RVP might give you advice on how to do better. They might tell you that you're talking too much or that you need to listen more to the client.
People who struggle often take coaching as an attack. They feel like someone is saying they aren't good enough. But a winner knows that feedback is just a shortcut to a bigger check.
If someone points out a mistake, they are actually helping you save time. They are showing you the mistakes they already made so you don't have to make them. To grow, you must:
Listen: Don't get defensive.
Learn: Ask, "How can I use this to get better?"
Change: Try the new way immediately.
Everyone wants to walk across the stage and get an award. But if you only cheer when you make a sale, you might get discouraged when things are slow.
To reach the top of the company, you have to value the effort. A growth mindset means you are proud of yourself for making 20 phone calls today, even if nobody answered. Why? Because the effort is what makes you a professional.
If you focus on the work, the results will eventually come. If you only focus on the results, you might give up before the "big win" happens. Remember, every RVP was once a brand-new agent who just kept showing up.
The best agents in the company are the ones who never stop asking questions. They want to know everything about how money works, how to lead a team, and how to help more families.
A growth mindset stays curious. This means reading the company manuals, watching training videos, and asking top leaders how they do it. Don't just do what you're told—ask why it works.
When you are curious, you become an expert. Clients trust experts. When you can explain things simply to a family, they feel safe working with you. This curiosity is what helps you solve problems and build a massive team.
The biggest hurdle in Primerica is rejection. You will hear "No" more than you hear "Yes." A fixed mindset hears "No" and thinks, "I’m not good at this." A growth mindset hears "No" and thinks, "I’m one step closer to my next 'Yes'!"
Think about a baby learning to walk. They fall down dozens of times. Does the baby think, "Maybe walking isn't for me?" No! They just get back up and try again.
In your business, every "No" is just practice. Every time someone tells you they aren't interested, you are getting better at your presentation. You are learning what to say and what not to say. In the growth mindset, there is no such thing as failure—there is only learning.
There is one magic word that every Primerica agent needs to use. That word is "Yet."
When you feel like you can't recruit anyone, don't say "I can't recruit." Say, "I haven't learned how to recruit yet." When you aren't sure how to explain an investment, say, "I don't understand this yet."
This one word changes everything. it means you will get there. It means you have the power to change and grow.
You can't change your thinking overnight. It takes practice. Here is how to start:
Week 1: Check Your Talk. Listen to the things you say to yourself. Stop calling yourself "bad" at things. Instead, ask, "How can I learn this?"
Week 2: Do the Hard Thing. Pick one task you’ve been avoiding—like calling that "big" prospect—and just do it.
Week 3: Ask for Help. Ask your leader for one thing you can do better. Then, go out and do it exactly how they told you.
Week 4: Read Something New. Spend 15 minutes a day reading a book about leadership or money.
Building a Primerica business is about more than just money. It is about becoming a better person. It is about turning yourself into a leader who can help others find financial freedom.
If you choose to have a growth mindset, you are making yourself "unstoppable." You won't be scared of hard work, you won't be hurt by rejection, and you will never stop getting better.
This week, pick one of the five steps and focus on it. Maybe it’s being curious or maybe it’s celebrating your effort. Watch how your business changes when your mind changes.
You weren't born a winner or a loser. You were born a learner. Let's go out there, keep learning, and build something great for your family and your team!
