Employee vs. Entrepreneur: The Fatal Mistake That Kills New Businesses

November 26, 20254 min read

“We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes—understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.”

Arianna Huffington

The Mindset Shift: Are You Building a Railroad or a Transportation Empire?

In the world of business, your mindset isn't just a part of the equation—it is the equation. Most people walk into the financial services industry with an employee mindset, conditioned by years of trading time for money. But to succeed in building a distribution system, you have to think like an owner from Day One.

Jeff Seagrave, a top leader in the industry, often shares the cautionary tale of the American railroad companies in the early 20th century. These tycoons owned the infrastructure of the nation. They were untouchable. Yet, within a few decades, many went bankrupt or lost massive market share to trucking and airlines.

Why? Because they defined their business too narrowly. They thought they were in the railroad business. Had they realized they were in the transportation business, they would be owning the airlines today.

The Lesson for You: Are you just selling life insurance? Or are you building a financial freedom distribution network? If you think small, your paycheck will stay small. If you think big—viewing yourself as a system builder rather than just a salesperson—your potential is limitless.

The Fatal Mistake: Sequential vs. Simultaneous Growth

When most people decide to start a small business, they follow a "sequential" checklist. It looks something like this:

  1. Find a location.

  2. Get business licenses and permits.

  3. Hire staff.

  4. Finally try to find customers.

This is what we call the Sequential Trap. It is the fastest way to go broke because you are spending money and time for months (or years) before you ever make a sale.

The "Simultaneous" Solution

In the Primerica model, we flip this script. We operate with a Simultaneous Mindset.

Jeff Seagrave teaches that you don't wait until you have your office, your license, and your expertise perfect before you start building. You do it all at once.

  • You study for your license.

  • AND you go on field training appointments with your trainer.

  • AND you start building your client base.

  • AND you start recruiting your team.

You don't wait to win. You earn while you learn. This concept of parallel processing is the secret weapon of the wealthy. While the employee waits for permission to start working, the entrepreneur starts building the plane while flying it.

The Lunch Analogy: Investing in Your Future

How do you view your lunch break?

  • The Employee: "Lunch is my time. I’m off the clock. I’m going to eat my sandwich and escape my boss."

  • The Business Owner: "Lunch is an opportunity. Who can I meet? Who can I network with? How can I move my business forward over a meal?"

The employee tries to minimize work to maximize comfort. The business owner sacrifices temporary comfort to maximize future freedom.

If you are serious about launching your financial services business, you need to audit your calendar. Are you treating this opportunity like a job where you punch a clock? Or are you treating it like a business where every moment is an investment in your future empire?

Actionable Guidance: How to Audit Your Mindset

To transition from employee to entrepreneur, you must take control of your time and your identity.

Step 1: Redefine Your Title Stop calling yourself a "rep" or an "agent." Start thinking of yourself as a "Business Owner in Training." When someone asks what you do, don't say, "I sell insurance." Say, "I teach families how to become financially independent, and I build teams of professionals who do the same."

Step 2: The Calendar Audit Look at your schedule for the next 7 days. Identify the "dead time" (commuting, lunch breaks, evening TV time).

  • Challenge: Replace three blocks of "dead time" with "build time." Listen to a training podcast during your commute. Take a prospect to lunch. Join a field training appointment in the evening.

Step 3: Embrace the "Simultaneous" Build If you are currently studying for your license, do not fall into the trap of studying in a cave. Schedule your exam, but also schedule your field training appointments now. Let your trainer build your business for you while you study.

Conclusion: Your Empire Starts Now

The railroad tycoons failed because they refused to adapt their thinking. Don't let that happen to you. You are not here to be a worker bee; you are here to build the hive.

Embrace the simultaneous build. Reclaim your time. Think bigger than just "selling a product." When you shift your mindset, you shift your income bracket.

Ready to start building your transportation empire? Don't wait. Text your trainer today and say, "I'm ready to book my first field training appointment." Let's get to work.
